The "normal" we return to in the fall will be better

How can we work together to unleash a caring and intellectually stimulating school environment?
What are some of the ‘old’ practices that we will let go?
What have we learned from our own success stories?
What does a ‘better’ normal mean to you?

To answer these questions, on Thursday, April 22nd, Kim Marshall, a renowned educational leader and author of the Marshall Memos, and a panel of outstanding leaders from religious and independent schools will share their experiences and ideas. Together with the audience, they will engage in a conversation about the unpredictable challenges and emotional fatigue of an academic year that is coming to an end, problem solve unresolved concerns and build upon new and exciting opportunities to create a thriving school environment that supports all learners, in the post-covid19 landscape.

“Your students want to see your eyes, hear your voice, watch what your hands are doing, and know your heart.  All of that is difficult at the moment, but remote learning has presented us with a perfect example of how constraints such as not being in the same room together can unleash creativity.” by Alex Pearson*

Mrs. Joann Heppt is the principal of The Resurrection Ascension Catholic Academy in Rego Park, Queens. The school expresses its philosophy in four very well-chosen words: Rise, Aspire, Challenge and Achieve. A Nursery to Grade 8 school, it centers on the whole child with an excellent academic education that celebrates the appreciation of cultures and faith in God. The school offers Dance, Violin and Robotics as well as Faith Formation. Students in grades 4-8 can join the Students Council where they learn ‘hands-on’ about the democratic process and social responsibility. And to further build on the latter, the school offers a unique Safety Patrol program for Junior High students who are responsible for ensuring that all students fulfill their duties.

Ms. Elie Deu is Head of the Williamsburg Northside School in Brooklyn. Founded by in 1999 by a group of entrepreneurial educators, Williamsburg Northside defines itself as progressive school and it serves approximately 350 students, from PreK through Grade 8. In Ms. Deu’s own words, “Questions are in fact more important than answers [..] they create the challenges that make us learn they are essential for social, emotional and cognitive development”. The school offers a diverse, inclusive, and flexible environment that allows for great individualization, and the implementation of an interdisciplinary curriculum that builds students’ independence and nurtures their own interests. The school has incorporated advanced technologies including the installation of Swivl cameras that provide robust support to teachers and students during synchronous learning.

Ms. Ashley Charnoff  has worked in the field of Jewish education for two decades serving from classroom teacher to school administrator.  She currently serves as the Curriculum Coordinator for General Studies at the Torah Academy for Girls Elementary School in Far Rockaway, NY. She earned a BA from Columbia College, a JD from New York University School of Law and a Masters in Early Childhood and Special Education from Touro. She was also a fellow in the ELAI program for educational leadership at Bar Ilan University and the Principal’s Training Institute at Harvard University.  As a member of the Speaker’s Bureau for the Consortium for Jewish Day Schools, Ashley has spoken internationally on educational topics curriculum, differentiated instruction and interactive math.
