As summer slowly winds down, many of us are thinking about September and the start of a new school year. Commercials are already advertising what is needed for the return to school and educators are designing their classroom esthetics and creating engaging lesson plans. Administrators are preparing their faculty with schedules and putting all of their careful plans in place. Students are planning to reunite with their classmates, both new and familiar, and are eager to meet their teachers. It is an exciting time of year!

Many teachers have joined in the excitement of preparing for September by participating in the self-directed learning opportunities as well as the Breakfast Bites to Fuel Professional Growth! webinars offered this August for professional growth. In continuing with this preparation, on August 30th, Kim Marshall, author of The Best of the Marshall Memo, will lead a discussion amongst new teachers in energizing them by addressing the Classroom Nuts and Bolts for the upcoming school year.

New teachers will join the ranks of experienced teachers this fall and they too want to be prepared for meeting their class. They are excited and perhaps nervous to embark on this new journey. The professional community of educators are here for them and are prepared to guide them in their new role. Kim Marshall will highlight the important areas to focus their attention on when guiding young learners in school. As a former teacher, principal and teacher himself for more than 30 years and now an instructional coach, workshop leader and author, Kim Marshall, has focused on the essential areas for teachers throughout his book:

  1. Planning with a Purpose - how to set the stage, plan, and make the plan compelling and the implementation.
  2. Managing Time for Impact - priorities, systems, and techniques.
  3. Leaders’ Emotional Intelligence - desirable quantities, building trust, dealing with stress, and cognitive quirks.

Each area offers professional learning suggestions for the educator allowing the opportunity to set goals, plan and self-assess. During this hour, join Fordham PDRC in unpacking a reading that will be motivational to administrators and teachers alike.
